Preventive checks for industrial pumps

A pre-start inspection cadence for centrifugal and positive-displacement pumps: bearings, seals, lubrication, alignment.

The cadence

A useful inspection cadence breaks the work into three loops: a walk-around every shift, a hands-on mechanical check every week, and a vibration / oil sample every quarter. Each loop is short enough to fit the rhythm of the plant and long enough to catch what the previous loop missed. Stop trying to do everything every week; assign the long-loop checks to a planned slot and protect that slot.

Resist the temptation to fold the daily walk-around into a PM task list. The walk-around is a sensory check — sight, sound, touch, smell — and the point is to notice what changed this shift, not to confirm a known-good state. A check that only confirms what you expected is a check that has stopped working.

Bearings, seals, lubrication

Bearings: temperature in your hand and a stethoscope or listening stick on the housing. Anything that runs warmer than the opposite end, or that sounds different from yesterday, is a reading to log and watch. Do not grease on a schedule — grease on condition, after the listening check tells you the bearing is dry.

Seals: a halo of product around the gland is a problem, no matter how small. The time to act on a leaking seal is the moment you see it; waiting for the leak rate to cross a threshold means the seal face has already worn past its recovery range.

Lubrication: sample on the calendar, but read the sample on the day it lands. Iron and copper trends rising together are a warning; chromium on its own is a different warning; silicon above baseline is contamination, not wear.

Alignment and soft-foot

Alignment drifts. Even a pump that was laser-aligned at commissioning will be off after the first thermal cycle of the piping. Re-align on the schedule the manufacturer publishes, not on the schedule the work order backlog allows — and keep the alignment report attached to the asset record so the next person can see the trajectory.

Soft foot — one mounting foot that lifts when the bolts are snugged — masquerades as misalignment. Always check soft foot before you dial in the coupling. If you skip this step, you will compensate for a geometry error with a coupling offset that loads the bearings every time the pump starts.

  1. Run the pump for at least 15 minutes at operating temperature before any alignment check; cold alignment is not the alignment the pump will live with.
  2. Walk the discharge piping first. A piping strain that the alignment compensates for today will move the pump off-alignment the moment the next valve is cycled.
  3. Strain-gauge the drive-end AND the non-drive-end bearing housings. A neighbouring bearing running hotter than the suspect one points at the seal, not the bearing.
